Ask Dr. Brown, Summer 2019

RéVive Skincare, Renessence Haircare and Bays Beauty Boutique founder Dr. Gregory Bays Brown fields your questions and shares his thoughts regarding the state of skincare, haircare and beauty in our ‘Ask Dr. Brown’ blog series. Our latest installment is all about the importance of summer skincare protection.

As a doctor and skincare specialist you’re a huge advocate for using sunscreen products year-round, and particularly in the summer. Tell us more.

I have always said the most important anti-aging product that anyone can use is sunscreen. A sunscreen, and/or products that contain sunscreen, staves off the aging process and most importantly decreases your risk of developing deadly skin cancer. Sunlight is the main source of UV (ultraviolet) rays, which can cause skin cancer, and is strongest in spring and summer, thus the particular importance for sunscreen now. Using sunscreen daily, even when it’s cloudy or raining, simultaneously improves skin quality and dramatically decreases the risk of skin cancer.

Besides sunburn, what are other damaging aspects of exposure to the sun?

A multitude of conditions, which will prematurely age you: dark spots, wrinkling, and sagging skin, to name just a few. Extensive sun exposure reduces elasticity in the skin, which results in the lines and crepiness that are visible everywhere from your face to your hands. Using a sunscreen and products that contain SPFs will help lessen these aging effects.

What is an SPF?

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is a measure of how well a sunscreen will protect skin from UVB rays, the kind of radiation that causes sunburn, damages skin, and can contribute to skin cancer. If your skin would normally burn after 10 minutes in the sun, applying an SPF 15 sunscreen would allow you to stay in the sun without burning for approximately 150 minutes (a factor of 15 times longer). For the best protection, one should us a minimum SPF sunscreen of 15.

Tell us more about your RéVive products that contain SPFs, and what they do.

Ask Dr. Brown, Fall 2018

373640RéVive Skincare, Renessence Haircare and Bays Beauty Boutique founder Dr. Gregory Bays Brown fields your questions and shares his thoughts regarding the state of skincare, hair care and beauty in our quarterly ‘Ask Dr. Brown’ blog series. His latest installment addresses skincare and hair care for the fall season and its cooler temperatures.

Dr. Brown, what is the first thing I should do for my skin now that fall is officially here?
Evaluate its current condition. Are you dry? Oily? Blotchy? When seasons change, typically your skin does as well. If your skin has appeared normal all throughout the summer, a sudden onslaught of cold weather can turn you dry very quickly. If you’re typically oily the new season may make your skin a bit more normal. That stated, don’t be afraid to change up your regimen to meet your skin’s changing needs. For instance those of you who use our RéVive Sensitive Oil Free Lotion may need to switch to the more hydrating formulas found in our Moisturizing Renewal Cream Day SPF 15 or Sensitif Renewal Cream SPF 30And if you’re not sure what you may need/want to change, please come by and consult our Product Specialist Dena Seng at 709 East Market Street in NuLu, or phone 502.413.0256.

You’re a huge advocate for the use of products that contain sunscreen year-round, what are your recommendations for fall?
I’ve said it many times before, but it bears repeating: just because the sun and temperatures outside aren’t scorching as they were this past summer, skincare products that contain sunscreen protection are an absolute must in autumn (and of course winter, spring, summer), even on cool, cloudy days. My RéVive recommendations:

Your hair care line Renessence has been referenced as ‘like skincare for your hair’. How does it work and what are your recommendations for amazing looking autumn hair?
As you assess your skin condition and determine its needs, you should do the same for your hair. First off eliminate months of heavy summer treatments, volumizers, you name it, from your hair and scalp by gently cleansing with a rejuvenating shampoo free of parabens and harsh sulfates. Our Renessence Follicle Forever Strengthening Shampoo is a daily cleanser that removes harmful debris – dead cells, oil, sebum, product buildup – which strangles the follicle and leads to unhealthy hair. Its unique blend of ingredients anchors the follicle for stronger hair with less thinning and shedding, along with a renewed, healthier scalp. And just as It’s essential for your skin to be properly hydrated for a healthy, glowing complexion, your hair requires moisturizing on a regular basis too. With the change in temperatures outside, coupled with heated air inside, hair is vulnerable to these outdoor/indoor environmental variations, often resulting in drier hair and an itchy scalp. To ensure it stays healthy, soft and supple, our Follicle Forever Thickening Conditioner is a volumizing moisturizer that renews dry, dull strands as it delivers sensational shine and manageability. And last but certainly not least, Renessence Follicle Forever Renewal Serum works at the molecular level to stimulate dormant and/or dying follicles for immediate renewal and rejuvenation. The result: resurrection and maintenance of healthy hair growth.

Ask Dr. Brown, Spring 2018

GBB Renessence HeadshotPioneer of the first skincare line created by a plastic surgeon, Louisville native Dr. Gregory Bays Brown has now applied his expertise to hair care with Renessence Hair. Dr. Brown’s biotechnology breakthroughs in the beauty industry are what set Renessence indelibly apart from existing hair products and treatments, as he explains in our latest blog Q&A:

Dr. Brown, how does Renessence work?

Renessence employs the latest scientific biotechnology to simultaneously address hair health and hair renewal. Like our skin, hair ages, and in many cases begins to thin, due to a variety of conditions – heredity, hormonal, etc. Developed for women and men of all ages, all ethnicities and hair types, Renessence Follicle Forever Strengthening Shampoo, Thickening Conditioner and Renewal Serum, dramatically improve hair health, density and regrowth. You’ll see instantly fuller, thicker hair from roots to ends, along with a healthy scalp.

How are your Shampoo and Conditioner different from others on the market?

Our Follicle Forever Strengthening Shampoo gently removes harmful debris – dead cells, oil, sebum, & product buildup – all of which strangle the hair follicle and lead to unhealthy hair and in some cases, hair loss. Importantly it opens the plates of keratin – the key structural material of hair – on the hair shaft itself, as if a series of umbrellas are opening simultaneously, instantly volumizing the hair. Once the plates are open after shampooing, our lightweight Follicle Forever Thickening Conditioner, much like a skincare moisturizer, positions itself underneath each open ‘umbrella’, which retains, and further enhances, hair volume.

Tell us about Renessence Follicle Forever Renewal Serum.

Completely unique, it’s the first-ever hair loss product to work at the molecular level, utilizing stem cell technology to kick start hair regrowth within the dormant and/or dying hair follicle (the follicle produces the hair itself). Our Follicle Forever Renewal Serum is formulated with the proprietary peptide Mirroirté™, which results in the resurrection and maintenance of hair growth. And while it’s not a drug, it’s as effective as FDA-approved hair products, but without the risk of harmful side effects as it is not absorbed into the bloodstream. Used on a daily basis you’ll see noticeable results in as little as three months.

Ask Dr. Brown, Winter 2018

RéVive Skincare and Bays Beauty Boutique Creator/Founder Dr. Gregory Bays Brown fields your questions and shares his thoughts regarding the state of skincare, and beauty in general, here on our ongoing blog series ‘Ask Dr. Brown’. His latest Q&A:

modigliani-at-tate-modern_jeanne-hbuterne-1919-image-the-metropolitan-museum-of-art-new-york_e667e12d721544a9f2f39e2a6aa98eb7You’re an avid art collector and supporter of the arts, especially here in Louisville; how has that influenced how you perceive beauty and the cosmetics industry?
Having been a plastic surgeon for 20 years, visual aesthetics is obviously very important to me. Art, whether it be artist derived (paintings, etc.) or God derived (human beings) is about one’s reaction to the subject. Beauty doesn’t necessarily mean beautiful, it means pleasing, moving, inspiring….there are many emotions of reaction to it.

Plastic Surgery Prep ShotWhat was not atypical for many years as women (& men) age – lasers, fillers, plastic surgery – is quite commonplace today especially with younger women, many of whom haven’t even reached 30. As a plastic surgeon, what are your thoughts on that?
With the advent of social media, reality TV,  instant access to many things, a ‘manipulated’ beauty has become the norm, i.e., an individual that obviously has had botox, injections etc. For me, the best example of aesthetic enhancement is one that is not obvious, that appears natural. I realize I am older but I fear the new norm will be the somewhat grotesque features of an over manipulated and surgerized face, i.e., guppy lips, pillow-sized cheeks, immovable foreheads, wind tunnel facelifts, on and on. I am hoping for the younger generation that is not a desired look.

A magna cum laude graduate from the University of Louisville, he served his general surgical internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard University and the University of Louisville, and then became a fellow in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Emory University.

Dr. Brown’s understanding of the skin, along with the application of Nobel Prize-winning science, resulted in the creation of his groundbreaking RéVive Skincare right here in Louisville. Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, this iconic, globally acclaimed brand is sold exclusively in Kentuckiana at Bays Beauty Boutique, as it was when it premiered in 1997. For our new blog series ‘Ask Dr. Brown’ he’ll field a variety of questions and share his thoughts regarding the state of skincare and beauty in general.

How does RéVive differentiate itself from the very competitive field of skincare and the various products now available, especially since its launch 20 years ago?
RéVive is the most natural of skincare products even though it is highly technological, as there are no receptors on human cells for plant molecules. However, there are for the bioengineered ingredients in RéVive; therefore, skin recognizes RéVive products as ‘self’, not foreign, a HUGE difference for the so-called ‘natural’ products.

There are a multitude of RéVive products in the collection from cleansers to serums; which one RéVive product would you recommend for men & women alike, at any age, to add to his/her skincare regimen & why?
I always say, if one only purchases a single RéVive product, it should be Moisturizing Renewal Cream, the very first product we launched 20 years ago. A retexturizing, hydrating night cream, it gently exfoliates, renews and moisturizes facial skin.
